Texas Third in Business Bankruptcy Rates
Texas small businesses are facing growing financial challenges, with the state ranking third in the nation for business bankruptcy filings, according to a recent LendingTree report. More than 4,500 Texas businesses filed for bankruptcy during a 12-month period ending in March 2026, marking a 41% increase from the previous year. While Texas is home to more than 3.5 million small businesses, the sharp rise in filings highlights the financial strain many owners are experiencing as economic conditions become more difficult.
The trend extends well beyond Texas, as business bankruptcies increased nationwide by more than 11% over the same period. Analysts point to higher interest rates, persistent inflation, increased borrowing costs, and cautious consumer spending as key factors putting pressure on businesses with limited profit margins or heavy debt. Financial experts encourage business owners to stay ahead of potential problems by closely monitoring cash flow, reducing unnecessary expenses, building emergency reserves, and communicating with lenders early, as seeking assistance before a financial crisis can provide more options for avoiding bankruptcy.
