Chapter 11 Bankruptcies Rise 16% in January 2025

February 4, 2025 - Commercial Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings surged 16% in January 2025 compared to the same month in 2024, according to data from Epiq AACER, a leading provider of U.S. bankruptcy filing statistics. A total of 539 commercial Chapter 11 cases were recorded last month, up from 465 in January 2024.

Overall, commercial bankruptcy filings increased 11% year over year, rising to 2,358 from 2,126. Small business bankruptcies, tracked under Subchapter V of Chapter 11, also saw an uptick, climbing 7% to 171 filings from 160 in the previous year.
