Bankruptcy Filings Rose 10.6 Percent from Last Year

Personal and business bankruptcy filings continued their upward trend in the twelve-month period ending September 30, 2025, rising 10.6% from the previous year. Total filings reached 557,376, up from 504,112 in 2024, according to data from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Business bankruptcies increased 5.6%, climbing from 22,762 to 24,039, while non-business filings rose 10.8% to 533,337, compared with 481,350 the prior year. Although filings have grown each quarter since mid-2022, they remain far below the peak of nearly 1.6 million recorded in 2010, following more than a decade of steady declines that bottomed out at 380,634 in June 2022. By chapter, the 2025 data show continued dominance of Chapter 7 liquidations (344,825 cases) and a modest increase in Chapter 13 repayment plans (203,118), while Chapter 11 reorganizations (8,937) and Chapter 12 family-farming and fishing cases (293) remained relatively small components of total filings.
